ReNew It Decks & Outdoor Living has been in business since 2014. The Deckorators Certified Pro services the Northern Michigan area building custom, composite decks as well as outdoor kitchens and pergolas.

Q: How is your company structured?
A:
Our company is composed of approximately 10 crews and 25 employees. We keep everything in-house along with some management staff. We also have sales teams that sell our projects and keep things rolling. Our long-term ambition is to move into some other markets such as the Grand Rapids area, creating a similar model to generate additional market share.

Q: How many decks do you typically build in a year?
A:
About 130 decks.

Q: When did you first encounter the Deckorators® brand?
A:
Deckorators was originally introduced to us a few years ago when the team did a meet and greet in Traverse City. It took us about a year to get everything rolling, but once we did, the product basically speaks for itself. Customers love it and, as an installer, the product is great. The decking has great qualities such a little to no thermal expansion, a composite that is mineral-based, and great moisture protection. Along the lakes here, they are really useful features to have.

Q: Is there anything unique about the Northern Michigan area that provides a challenge or an opportunity?
A:
North Michigan is really unique in the sense that there are a lot of lakes, which leads to a lot of custom builds. There are no cookie-cutter decks as every deck is a unique project. Every job has its own unique challenges, from the type of engineering to the scale of the project to working along lakeshores.

Q: What are some of the notable reasons you continue to use or work with Deckorators?
A:
Deckorators has been a great partner with us over the last few years in terms of getting the product to us, the quality of the product and the 25-year warranty they offer. It’s outstanding, especially from the labor side of things. We stand behind our product for the long term too, so it's a great partnership.

Q: Do you find any specific benefits to some of the Deckorators products?
A:
We like the Voyage mineral-based composite decking line because it doesn't absorb moisture. That's typically what we use along lakefronts. The strength-to-weight ratio and minimal thermal expansion is key for our market.

Q: How did you come to be a Deckorators Certified Pro?
A:
We became a Deckorators Certified Pro shortly after we did the meet and greet. We wanted to take on the product line at that time, so we went through an extensive training program with all our people in order to introduce them to the product. Deckorators has been great about getting us to training and taking the time out to meet with all our guys and the management team to go over the product. After that, we proceeded with building a couple of custom decks and seeing how the product performs, which has been good.

Q: Is there anything that you'd like people to know about ReNew It?
A:
Our company philosophy at ReNew It is to work with the customers to make their dream deck a reality. That's one of the things that sets us apart. We do full 3-D renderings of our designs to give a good visual of how a project is going to turn out and do our best to make the project come to life for them within a reasonable timeframe.

Q: What does the future for ReNew It Decks look like and how does Deckorators play into that from a business-relationship standpoint?
A:
We plan on expanding into other markets over the state of Michigan. As we expand, we will be using Deckorators products as one of our primary brands throughout our retail locations. We look forward to growing our relationship with Deckorators as we expand, making that our future for the next 10 years.
