Jonathan Moeller, a Deckorators Certified Elite deck builder, shares his approach to deck building and customer service, emphasizing quality, efficiency, and the benefits of using Deckorators products.
Q: How would you define your approach to building decks and serving customers?
A: My approach to serving customers and building decks is to be the best. My goal is to be the best company in Colorado. When I talk to customers, how I treat them and their property is very important to me and my crew. I strive to take the customer's vision and combine that with the expertise of Colorado Custom Covers & Decks. That way the customer is able to get an idea of all the possibilities for their outdoor space. Once we have a scope of the project, I have a program we use to bring the design to life by creating a 3-D rendering of the project. This allows us to show the customer a preview of their outdoor space, and we are able to adjust and change it based on the feedback from the customer.
Q: What makes your company truly unique?
A: One thing that's unique about us is that we show up at 7 a.m. and work until about 5 p.m. every day. Roughly 90% of my customers explain how they can't believe how fast our guys complete a project. In terms of the product, it speaks for itself. Turning over a great product to me is important. Something that I've always strived for is being efficient and teaching my guys to be efficient. Anybody can turn over an awesome deck, but if it takes you two years, that doesn't really set you apart.
Q:What pushed you to make the switch to Deckorators?
A: What really pushed me to make the switch to Deckorators was the slip-resistant and enhanced traction feature of the decking. The decking from the previous company I was using would get really slick. I constantly had customers complaining to me about it being slick, and there was nothing I could do to control that as a contractor besides change the product. That’s when we started looking at new potential products, and Deckorators was what we landed on. We installed Vault at the time, and I could tell right away that it was an awesome product. We started using Voyage once it came out, and it’s better than almost all the other decking out there. It’s been exciting to use a good product that I can stand behind as a contractor. I can vouch for Deckorators and sell the product easily.
Q: Can you talk about the features of Voyage that are beneficial to this area?
A: The best thing about Voyage decking is that it doesn't expand or contract nearly as much as other leading composites. We experience a lot of alternating weather conditions in Colorado. For example, one day last year we had an 80-degree swing from the beginning of the day when we started work to the end of the day. That 80-degree difference can make it difficult to ensure everything stays tight during the building process. We don't want gaps. We aim to keep everything nicely tightened and avoid the boards from bubbling and warping given the changes in temperature. The traction of Voyage is just awesome. Voyage is hands down the best board on the market.
Q: What does the future of your relationship with Deckorators look like?
A: We specifically use Surestone mineral-based composite (MBC) boards. We believe that works well in our area. It’s a far superior board than any other board on the market. The low thermal expansion and contraction really helps with what the finished product looks like. It handles various weather conditions very well.
