Q: How many decks do you typically build in a year? What does your crew look like?
A: We are a smaller outfit. We currently run with myself and two other guys. We build somewhere between 10 and 20 decks a year. We typically do larger projects that take a little bit more time. The size of the company is by design. We take a lot of pride and put a lot of importance on building our relationships and rapport with our clientele. I feel that being a smaller outfit allows us to capitalize and leverage that.
Q: What makes Precision Construction truly unique?
A: As a company, we’re willing to explore a nonstandard option. About five years ago, I decided I wanted to try steel. After doing some research, it seemed like a substantially better option for people. The first steel-frame deck was a nightmare. I didn’t have the right tools nor the familiarity with the product. It took forever. But seeing the final product confirmed that this was what we were going to do. I think what makes us unique in terms of using steel is that I can go to any customer's house and it doesn't matter how unique the build is. I know that we have the tools and the ability to build literally anything they want.
Q: What products are you using from Deckorators today? What are some of your go-tos, and what are some of the newer products that you are using on your decks and why?
A: As a company we take a lot of pride in advocating for the best possible products for our clients. Deckorators aligns with us in terms of the labor warranty that is available. The Voyage and Vault mineral-based composite technology gives us that product for our clients. The warranty behind it is the best that's out there for a homeowner. The low maintenance of the product and the minimal expansion and contraction means that we can do patterns and miters and know those will last over time. We're a big fan of the Deckorators Aluminum Railing because of the rust resistance and the welded panel is really solid. We know that people will be safe and have a product that's going to last.
Q: What has been your experience working with Deckorators as a company?
A: Our experience with Deckorators has been nothing but positive. We've had outstanding support from them. They've manufactured things specifically for us that nobody else would do. They've taken feedback from us on their products, and we've seen that feedback used in future products. You can’t ask for a better family feeling than the one you get working with Deckorators.
Q: What does the future of Precision Construction look like? What does that relationship with Deckorators look like?
A: The future is wide open for us. I don't want to compromise the relationship-building side of the company for the sake of getting larger as a company. One of our big pushes is just to keep redefining what's possible, especially with substructure and framing. I think Deckorators will be a huge part of that in terms of what's possible with decking design. We can do ground-level decks, submersible decks if we have to. I'm constantly searching and pushing my engineer to do stuff that hasn't been done. When the time comes, I can go to Deckorators and say I need something that's never been done, and they can make it happen for me.
